Overview
The Brother MFC-8840 is an all-in-one printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine that offers duplex (two-sided) capabilities and several other features for the home, home office, or even business office. It comes with a multifunction paper tray that feeds envelopes, labels, letterhead, and even legal size pages for the best versatility. The MFC-8840 is a monochrome printer/copier that outputs up to 21 pages every minute.
Features and Functionality
The Brother MFC-8840 comes with parallel and USB interfaces standard, but NC-9100H internal Ethernet and 2200W external wireless servers are both optional interfaces for networking. Other potential upgrades include upping the standard 32 MB memory and adding a second 250-sheet paper tray. These two trays, in addition to the 50-sheet multifunction tray increase the Brother MFC-8840’s paper capacity to 550 sheets.
The large paper capacity, when coupled with a high-yield replacement Brother MFC-8840 toner cartridges, allows you to go for longer stretches without the need to replace paper or toner. (The TN570 toner cartridge yields up to 6,700 pages.) The maximum monthly duty cycle for the Brother MFC-8840 goes as high as 20,000 printed pages, with a recommended monthly print volume of 500 to 3,000 pages.
Faxing is done via a 33.6K SuperG3 fax modem, with scanning at about 2 seconds per page. The fax of the Brother MFC-8840 is call waiting, caller ID, and distinctive ring ready and can autodial as many as 340 locations. Fax forwarding, automatic redial, and 500-600 fax page memory are all included.
As with printing, black-and-white copies can be produced at 21 sheets per minute. Pages can be copied from either the flatbed document glass or from the 50-page automatic document feeder. They can be reduced to as small as 25 percent or enlarged up to 400 percent. Pages can also be scanned from either the glass or the automatic document feeder and can be “scanned to” email, image, OCR, or files.
There are choices for replacement toner cartridges, too. The Brother TN540 cartridge allows for as many as 3,500 pages at 5 percent coverage. The Brother TN460 toner is a high-yield cartridge, producing as many as 6,000 sheets. While the initial cost of the high-yield cartridge is larger, it actually provides a lower per-page cost.
