Dell 1710n Laser Printer
Overview
The Dell 1710n monochrome laser printer can function as the “go to” printer in a small office workgroup or in a high volume printing home office. This printer is built to handle high amounts of printing on a daily basis. The 1710n can be purchased for under $300 and is widely available in both new and used conditions.
Features and Functionality
Dell rates the 1710n at 27 pages per minute, which in this class of printers is very fast. The speed of this models print engine will enable this printer to keep up with busy office environments. This printer is equipped with a 366 MHz processor and 32 MB of memory. Owners who intend to print primary graphics including charts and photos should consider upgrading the amount of memory. The 1710n can hold up to 160 MB of RAM.
Since this printer is intended for heavy volume printing it has a maximum paper capacity of 800 pages. It arrives from Dell with a standard 250 sheet paper tray. The optional 550 sheet paper tray is required to boost the paper capacity to its maximum level. This printer can accommodate various paper sizes including: A4, A5, Folio, Legal, JIS B5, Statement, Executive, and Letter A Size . Various envelope sizes can be used as well including: US No 9, US No 10, International C5, International B5, and International DL sizes.
The 1710n output quality is good enough for internal office use. Text based documents printed at a font size of 5 or higher looked good. Font sizes smaller than a 5 were not legible in most font styles. Graphics quality was decent at best. Graphics prints showed banding and poor replication of shadows and grayscale. Given the cost of this printer and other features the print quality shouldn’t steer anyone away as it performs well enough for most day to day tasks.
10/100 Ether net connectivity is the recommended connection method for the Dell 1710n. The features of this printer show best when it is used in a multiple user environment. USB 2.0 and parallel port are two additional connectivity options for this printer. The printer doesn’t come with any cables, so owners will need to obtain them separately.
The Dell 1710n toner cartridge is available with a 4,500 page yield rating. The 310-5402 toner cartridge is easy to install and offers owners of this printer a low price per print.
Conclusion
High speed monochrome printing, 10/100 network connectivity, and an overall low cost per print make the Dell 1710n an oversized personal laser that is perfectly suited to be a small office workhorse printer.
